Lotus Plaza - Strangers
Deerhunter guitarist Lockett Pundt's first LP as Lotus Plaza, The Floodlight Collective, was slathered in the kind of six-string amniotic goo that continues to be all the rage within indie musical culture. On a whole, it was an enjoyable first step, but "Strangers", the first single from Pundt's forthcoming follow-up, Spooky Action at a Distance, finds him making considerable growth as a solo artist. Anyone who's played the living shit out of , the Pundt-penned monster highlight from Deerhunter's 2010 LP Halcyon Digest, will immediately find a lot to like here, from Pundt's slackened, front-and-center vocals to the dewy chimes of the track's walking guitar line. The closing moments of "Strangers" come slowly, the tempo dropping incrementally with every completed melodic figure, until the whole thing ends in one sharp cymbal wash, as quickly as the pleasures that arrived before it.
